Background
Ride-share applications present significant accessibility challenges for disabled individuals, particularly wheelchair users. Access Cab addresses this gap by creating a platform that enables users with disabilities to maintain independence in their daily commutes.
Problem Statement
Design an app with a complementary website to help adults with physical disabilities commute independently, on demand, without the advance booking requirements or limitations of traditional accessible transit.
Research Findings
A competitive analysis of existing ride-share services revealed that Uber and Lyft offer only limited wheelchair-accessible options in most cities. Traditional handicap transportation requires advance booking and involves waiting while other passengers are served first.
Key pain points identified:
- Lack of on-demand wheelchair-accessible vehicles
- High costs due to limited ride options
- Inability to arrange transportation quickly, unlike non-disabled users
Research methods included user interviews with empathy mapping, competitive research on existing platforms, and persona development.
Design Process
The process moved from site mapping and wireframing through low-fidelity mockups, design system establishment, and into high-fidelity prototypes. Key refinements included:
- Eliminated duplicate navigation elements
- Added a hamburger menu for expanded options
- Improved date/time selection for intuitive booking
- Streamlined the overall booking flow
User Testing Feedback
Two key insights emerged from user testing:
- Round-trip booking should be available at initial booking, not only at confirmation
- The driver notification system needed to account for a broader range of disabilities beyond wheelchair use, including hearing and visual impairments
